About me

Picture
I am an Associate Professor in the Department of Political Science and International Studies at Georgia Southern University. My research and teaching areas include, Comparative Politics and International Relations. Particularly, I am interested in studying various dimensions of political conflict and terrorism including the causes of lethality, processes that sustain political violence, and the consequences of conflict in the form of displacement and migration. During my graduate studies, I published on the topic of strategic interaction between rebels and the state in Nepal. This piece motivated me to expand my research focus to explore how terrorist groups survive. My dissertation titled, “Who Supports Terrorism? A Comparative Study of Terrorist Resource Networks," analyzes civilian support of terrorist groups. This research looks at how terrorist groups interact with civilians. I compare various terrorist groups to show how - territory, political involvement, target selection, sub-group affiliations and ethnic fragmentation combine to explain civilian support for terrorist groups. My findings ultimately address the complicated issues present when intervening in communities where active terrorist groups are interacting regularly with civilian population. At present, my ongoing research discusses the nature of violence associated with the Rohingya refugee crisis in South and Southeast Asia. I recently concluded two phases of field research in Bangladesh and India. In addition to writing papers on this issue, I completed documentary film titled, 'The Voices of Rohingya Refugees.'
I became interested in studying and teaching about political conflict while pursuing my masters in India. I was  deeply affected by the communal riots of 2002 in Gujarat, India. This led me to conduct my M.Phil thesis on violence and militarization within Hindu nationalist organizations in India. I completed my MA and M.Phil from Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi, India. For my undergraduate studies, I went to Jadavpur University in my hometown of Kolkata, India.
